Writing isn’t necessarily about Making Money

The Truth

You can make money from writing. There are a lot of places that will pay you for your copywriting, or you can search and submit to markets looking for the writing you do, but more often than not, Writing is its own reward. There are so many other reasons we write, and if we only focus on the money, we miss out on so much.

1. Writing teaches commitment.

We commit ourselves, whether we are writing a book, a short story, or even a blog post. Completing this task, no matter what else comes up, we show up; we put in our time, we write every day – we learn about commitment – one about keeping a promise to ourselves to WRITE.

2. Writing allows us to develop our craft.

It is only through the process of writing that we can develop our craft. The more we write, the better we get. And if we keep at it – day by day – we will improve. This is why it is so essential to WRITE EVERY DAY. Push forward, and even if your success seems limited, you ARE improving your craft with each word you put on the page.

3. We write to document our lives.

One of the tools I encourage writers to use is a ‘warm up’ time of writing by journaling.

Usually, this exercise will help you find new things to write, and it establishes a daily ritual. (One way is to join the writers at 750words.com – you are encouraged to write daily – it doesn’t matter what you write – just write 750 words to complete your daily task.)

While you begin this daily task, it is sometimes difficult to find motivation. Often, you may feel like you are struggling and wondering if you have what it takes. Deal with the disappointment and setbacks.

IF you want to earn a paycheck from your writing – it takes a great deal of tenacity. You will write every day, but you will also research markets, write query letters, and keep track of your progress.

However, there are so many more rewards to writing.

  • An increase in our mindfulness.
  • A documentation of our lives.
  • And a creative form of escape.

Money doesn’t define your writing career; we all have to start somewhere. What makes us successful is that we keep going.

Until next time,
